Professor Shorty puts opponent to sleep to capture V3Fights Flyweight Title
It was a battle of Champions when Sean “Shorty Rock” Santella took on Lawrence DiGuilio at V3 Fights in an Interim Flyweight Title fight. Shorty was representing CFFC, while DiGuilio was fresh off a :33 second submission victory to claim the HFC Flyweight Title. Both men also are currently ranked as the #1 Flyweights in their region, with Shorty (17-6) representing the Northeast and DiGuilio (22-9) the Midwest.
With Shorty a First-Degree Black Belt, and all-eight of DiGuilio’s finishes coming by way of submission, the fight was always likely to find its way to the canvas, and once it did Shorty did what he does best – locked up the submission. After dragging DiGuilio to the mat where DiGuilio attempted a kimura from bottom half-guard. When DiGuilio shot for a deep-half sweep he left himself vulnerable to a triangle. After rolling to his back with the submission, and using elbows to open a window to switch the side of the lock, Shorty clamped down hard. DiGuilio fought the submission with everything he had but the hold rendered him unconscious, adding a 10th belt to Shorty’s collection.
“I think I’m the best flyweight in the world, Jiu-Jitsu wise,” Shorty said after the fight. “I don’t think anyone stands a chance with me on the ground.”
The win is another statement to back up many observers’ claims that Shorty is the best Flyweight outside the UFC – which also happens to be bolstered by three separate attempts by the UFC to add Shorty as a replacement fighter. Although the victory leaves him well-suited for a call up, Shorty isn’t taking anything for granted.
“I’ve been in this business for awhile, and you don’t know what’s gonna happen. I’m just looking to keep fighting.”
Should the UFC not come calling Shorty may be in line for a unification bout with current V3 Fights Flyweight Champion Jeremiah Cullen.
“I thought I was coming here to fight the champ. That’s what I thought I was doing, but I guess there were some issues. I don’t turn down fights with anyone.”
